Crestwood wins the 2008 Luzerne County Envirothon!

One hundred eighty students making up 36 teams were tested on their knowledge of the environment at the Luzerne County Envirothon on Thursday, April 17th at PPL’s Susquehanna Riverlands.
The top scoring team, Crestwood Team A, finished with a total score of 365 and will have the opportunity to represent Luzerne County at the Pennsylvania State Envirothon, to be held at the Penn State Campus in State College on May 19-20, 2008.
The following schools placed 2nd through 4th respectively: Wyoming Area A, Hazleton A and Wyoming Area B.
The Envirothon is a competition for Luzerne County high school students in grades 9 – 12, with the following school districts participating in this year’s event: James M. Coughlin JSHS, Crestwood HS, GAR JSHS, Greater Nanticoke Area HS, Hazleton Area HS, Hanover Area JSHS, Elmer L. Meyers JSHS, MMI Preparatory School, Northwest Area Middle & HS, Pittston Area SHS, Wyoming Valley West SHS and Wyoming Area JSHS.
The following agencies facilitated the testing stations: for Aquatics, the PA Fish & Boat Commission; for the Current Issue, DCNR Bureau of Parks; for Forestry, DCNR Bureau of Forestry; for Soils and Land Use, NRCS; and for Wildlife, PA Game Commission.
Volunteers from the Department of Environmental Protection in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Conservation District staff and directors, and members of the public assisted at the Envirothon by monitoring teams and testing stations, by assisting with the scoring, and in other areas as needed.
Hillside Farms has regularly donated chocolate and white milk for the students on the day of the event. The refreshments and lunch were donated by PPL.
